About this Coffee:
Koke's Cooperative Wash Station operates under the umbrella of the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU), which is an organization established in 2002 in an effort to establish stability amid a fluctuating and unstable coffee market in Ethiopia. It represents tens of thousands of small coffee farmers in six districts of Ethiopia: Yirgacheffe, Gedeb, Wanago, Dilla Zuria, Bule, and Kochere.
The average coffee producer in Ethiopia owns less than 1 hectare of land, often closer to 1/4 or even 1/8 per hectare. The coffee is delivered to the washing station in cherry form, sorted and processed in one-day batches.
YCFCU is a Fair Trade and certified organic cooperative, which is somewhat unusual among Ethiopian coffee growers. Due to its status as a democratic cooperative, the YCFCU is also exempt from national coffee bidding requirements through the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX), which is where most of the country's coffee production is sold to international markets.
