About this Coffee:
Hacienda La Papaya is the farm and property of Juan Peña, who is perhaps the most famous emerging specialty coffee producer in Ecuador. Juan is a multigenerational farmer, but he is relatively new to coffee: a former long-stemmed rose grower, he began experimenting with coffee plants around 2010, after disastrous weather swept through his flower fields.

Devoting his energy entirely to coffee, he has worked to develop as healthy, resilient, and horticulturally intentional a farm as possible, with a well-kept plant nursery and an on-property "input garden". (The "input garden" is interesting and shows Juan's dedication to science and methodical experimentation: he has coffee trees planted several meters apart and labeled with the fertilizer inputs they are given, to track the impact of nutrients. in the growth and development of the cherry tree.

Juan grows several varieties on this land, and also actively participates in the processing experiments. His agriculture is meticulous, scientific, curious, and generous: he provides neighbors and agricultural workers in his nursery, along with seedlings, so that they can develop their own plots.
