About this Coffee:
Koke's Cooperative Wash Station operates under the umbrella of the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU), which is an organization established in 20002 in an effort to establish stability amid a fluctuating and unstable coffee market in Ethiopia. It represents tens of thousands of small coffee farmers in six districts of Ethiopia: Yirgacheffe, Gedeb, Wanago, Dilla Zuria, Bule, and Kochere.
The average coffee producer in Ethiopia owns less than 1 hectare of land, often closer to 1/4 or even 1/8 per hectare. The coffee is delivered to the washing station in cherry form, sorted and processed in one-day batches.
YCFCU is a Fair Trade and certified organic cooperative, which is somewhat unusual among Ethiopian coffee growers. Due to its status as a democratic cooperative, the YCFCU is also exempt from national coffee bidding requirements through the Ethiopian Commodity E ̋xchange (ECX), which is where most of the country's coffee production is sold to international markets.
